Character Biography
Background
Born September 16, 1971 and raised Tamales Bay, CA by a pair of hippies who ran a Bed and Breakfast, Sara was a braniac from the get-go - Sara herself says that in high school, she was a science geek. Sara comes from a traumatic background - after years of abuse, Sara's mother, Laura, killed her father.[1] After her mother was committed, Sara entered foster care.[2] While she can't remember the name of her first foster parent, she eventually came to refer to one of her foster mothers as a mom. Sara's mother was involved in legal proceedings (possibly about this) in 1984.[2]
Sara went to Harvard and for the first time, grew as a person outside the brain (including a trip to the Mile High Club)[3], though as evidenced by her constant lack of understanding of pop-culture, the science geek never left her. After getting a Bachelors of Science in Theoretical Physics from Harvard, Sara transfered to UC Berkley, where she got her Masters. During her time at Berkley, Sara started working at the San Francisco Coroner's office, where she stayed and eventually became a CSI level 2. It was during this time[4] that she attended one of Gil Grissom's lectures. For a time, she and Grissom worked together in San Francisco.
Season One
After Holly Gribbs was shot[5], Grissom brought Sara in to investigate the situation and assist in solving the case.[6] Sara stayed on and quickly became a CSI 3 in Las Vegas. Her new teammates were quick to learn that Sara was obsessive and passionate about her work, often listening to her police scanner on her nights off.[7] While Nick and Warrick tend to tease Sara about this nature, Grissom urges her to find a hobby. Several of her colleagues also flirt with her, and she returns their flirtations, though nothing more happens along those lines; we have no indications that Sara has any kind of romantic or social life. Her work as a CSI was rated as outstanding, however she needs to improve her ability to prioritize, as noted by her lack of a personal life, and her tendency to obsess about various cases.
Seasons Two and Three
With few known hobbies, Sara's life is her work. After a case where a woman who stays home, works online, orders take out and shops online is killed, Sara returned home and forcibly cleans out her apartment of mail order catalogs and leftover take-out.[8] Subsequently, she began to date an EMT Paramedic named Hank Peddigrew, which lead to some small conflict between her and Grissom.
Season Three is one of betrayal and mortality for Sara. First she finds that a prosecutor whom she had trusted as a friend turns out to be a murderer (this is also the first mention of an older brother).[9] Later, she discovers (completely by accident) that Hank Peddigrew, the paramedic she had been dating, already had a girlfriend, and that he was cheating on her with Sara.[10] To quote Jorja Fox, Sara is "so sure that she knows everything about someone" that the betrayals are emotionally damaging. At the end of the season, Sara is almost blown up in the lab; the subsequent feelings of immortality (she survived the explosion, after all) leads her to try and arrest a suspect by herself, and she finally asks Grissom out on a date, which he turns down.[11]
Season Four
Sara's life took a downward spiral after that. With Grissom having turned her down, the possible of their personal relationship was hinted at when Grissom took the stand for a case.[12] Later, when a victim looked very simliar to Sara, Grissom took her off the case, and told the murder suspect that he had chosen his career over Sara (unaware that she was watching from outside).[13] Brass, who had also watched the interview, later wondered if she had a drinking problem.[14]
With both Sara and Nick up for a key position, Sara asked Grissom that whatever it was between them not affect his decision. In the end, Grissom recommended Nick for the slot, however due to lack of funding, the position was not given to anyone.
Jim Brass was the only one to notice that Sara was drinking, and took to her in a fatherly gesture. While she may or may not have a problem, she was pulled over for driving while intoxicated at the end of the season. Grissom picked her up from the station and had her see a PEAP Counselor. [15]
Seasons Five and Six
Because of Sara's pedantic attention to her work, she occasionally winds up in hot water with Ecklie. After blowing up at Catherine, she's suspended and it's only to Grissom that Sara reveals that her mother had killed her father.[16] Later, when the two work a case at a mental institution and Sara is attacked, she tells Grissom that after her father died, her mother had been in a psychiatric hospital.[17] It is also during the fifth season that we learn that Sara had been in a foster home.[2]
Season six appeared to show how Sara was moving on to being a more stable CSI. She was rational and distanced herself from her emotions when a young girl was missing, and all in all her work was steady.[18] After Sara espoused her views on marriage,[19] she ended the season in a bedroom with Grissom, telling him she wasn't ready to say goodbye.[20]
Season Seven
Sara assists Grissom closely, while he works on the case of the miniature crime scene killer. Their personal relationship is hinted at in brief scenes in a couple of episodes (rarely lasting more than a minute per episode, and always mentioned in passing). When Grissom leaves for a teaching seminar out of state[21], their relationship is strained, and Sara is distant upon his return.[22] In the season finale, Sara is trapped under a car and left to die, in the killer's attempt to hurt Grissom by taking away the only person he loves.[23]
Seasons Eight and Nine
Sara managed to escape from her trap[24] and nearly walked all the way to safety before collapsing. Luckily she was spotted and rescued, with Grissom flying with her to the hospital. She was interviewed by Ecklie regarding her relationship with Grissom[25] before returning to work on the swing shift. Her life changed again a few days later, when Grissom proposed and Sara accepted.[26] No longer working with her friends and loved ones, Sara begins to hit the wall. She has issues with the randomness of violence,[27] and after facing Hannah West[28] for a second murder, Sara leaves Las Vegas, her job and Grissom.[29]
Sara returns to Las Vegas following Warrick's shooting. While in town, she helps solve his murder and attends his funeral. [30] She stays on longer when an old case [7] resurfaces [31], even though she wants to go on a trip with Grissom. After dealing with the Adlers, Sara again leaves Vegas, her relationship with Grissom a question, as she does not tell him where she is [32], only that she is happy. [33]
